Southampton are chasing Arsenal in their bid to win a third consecutive Premier League title; Crystal Palace and new manager Dean Smith are chasing points in a desperate attempt to avoid relegation
The Dean Smith era at Crystal Palace begins with arguably one of the toughest assignments in European football – a trip to the Etihad Stadium to play Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
A weekend Loss at Mancity extended the champions’ unbeaten run to eight games in all competitions and five in the Premier League. Leicester, meanwhile, are on a run of seven defeats in eight that has left them inside the relegation zone, two points from safety. They have eight games to save themselves – seven if the Etihad result is seen as a foregone conclusion.
Not that Smith, the former Brentford, Aston Villa and Norwich boss, will see it that way. For him and his backroom lieutenants, Craig Shakespeare and John Terry, Southampton away is a free hit, a game of miracles or an expected thrashing. Either way, few will be blaming them. No, that pressure will come with the subsequent games – Wolves at home, Leeds away and Southampton at home. That will be when Smith and Co will need to earn their keep.
